The Open High School Program is a competitive program. The teams work together to build the skills to play at a highly competitive level. The CHS Varsity teams have consistently been one of the top teams in New Jersey, and the CHS JV team has consistently been one of the top 5 teams in New Jersey (playing against other Varsity programs). The 68s team is a developmental team to build skills for players to move into a more competitive level of play. New in the Fall of 2025 is the Wednesday team for players who may not be able to dedicate full time to play in a competitive program during the Fall season.

2024-25 Tryout Practice Details/Expectations
The fall season is coming up soon! We have a potential record number of players interested in the open program so far, which is great, and we are working to create good playing opportunities for everyone. If you haven’t already, please fill out this 2024-25 Interest Form so we can be sure to keep you in the loop regarding registration, practices, etc. Below is some important information about pre-season practices, tryouts and expectations.
Open program practices for returning players (from all HS programs/teams) will begin prior to the first day of school–Tuesday-Thursday, 8/27-29 and Tuesday, Wednesday (9/3-4). We recognize that many families will have travel plans during these days. As such, these practices are not technically mandatory, but anyone who is in town on these dates should attend. The first mandatory tryout-practice of the year will be the first day of school, Thursday, Sept 5th. New players should attend practices starting on this date. It is possible that we may have a few pre-season new player practices, but that is TBD at this time. Tryouts will then run through the following week, Monday-Thursday, 9/9-12.
We will run an array of drills and scrimmages during tryout practices that are designed to facilitate coaches’ evaluation of player’s skills and potential. In addition, all players who are interested in playing for varsity or JV must run a time trial and throw with a coach for a period of about 5 minutes, at which time the player will be asked to demonstrate a variety of different throwing and catching techniques (you will have an opportunity to express you interested in these teams at a later date). Time trials will consist of an agility circuit, assessment of vertical leap, a 40 yard dash (width of the field), a 100 yard sprint (back line to back line), a 600 yard run (twice around the field, roughly), and a one mile run. Players should attempt to complete each stage of the time trials at the fastest speed they can without stopping or walking. These are a few of the approximate paces/times we are looking for: 100 yards – Varsity 12.5 – 14.0s / JV 14.0 – 15.5s; 1 mile – Varsity 6:30 – 7:30m / JV 7:30 – 8:30m. Players will have the option to complete their time trials and some additional tryout requirements during the optional pre-season practices (8/27-9/4).
A quick note about time trials: These will factor into roster decisions, but are not necessarily make or break. They are also intended to present players with a goal to train toward over the course of the next 3-4 weeks and will provide metrics that can be used to assess individual fitness improvement over the course of the season (we repeat time trials intermittently over the course of the year so you can gauge your progress).
Overall, players will be evaluated on the basis of skill/aptitude, spirit-teamwork, game sense, rules and strategic knowledge as well as their speed/athleticism. Each player will receive specific feedback at the end of the tryout process including rationale for team placement. We intend to communicate final roster assignments during the week of September 16-20.
If you have any questions whatsoever about the tryout process, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
